Semantic prosody?

19/11/2015

This is a bit of a puzzle. There is a small article on Wikipedia called Semantic Prosody which seems to be about collocation and implication, but not at all about prosody. Can anyone put me right on this - is there a different meaning of prosody used in linguistics that relates to the meanings of words rather than to prosodic aspects of speech? Otherwise, I think this article needs to be taken out.

Yes, 'semantic prosody' is taking the concept of prosody(as in intonation) and using it as a metaphor for the 'tone' of meanings in speech.

Hi, Peter,
In Systemic Functional Linguistics, the term "prosody" is extended to the description of patterns of use in the lexico-grammar.
J. Martin. Prosodic Structure. Grammar for Negotiation. (I am afraid I don't have the whole reference handy, but the article is "Googable").
Best,
Marina

Thanks for the information - I'm glad I enquired about this, because I was quite baffled by the terminology!
